Ykids are back with another Carnival Costumes Project, this time during the Capital of Culture celebrations in Liverpool.
This year 30 children are involved in the project making costumes and wind sock kites and will be taking part in the Lord Mayor's Parade in Liverpool on 7th June (starting and finishing on Pall Mall).
Come and cheer on the pride of Bootle and see the great costumes the children have been involved in making.
This is a great project! Everyone has so much fun during the weeks running up to carnival season making costumes. It can be a rather crazy time with so many children, parents, Ykids volunteers and staff cutting, sticking, painting and sowing etc in the same hall. Then there's the excitement of the day when a double decker bus arrives to take a big group of eager children and their costumes off into town to parade with people from Liverpool, as well as all over the North West and UK. At the end of the day they come home tired and happy, singing and celebrating that Bootle kids can hold their own, even amongst professional carnival performers.
Each previous year that Ykids has entered, the children of Bootle have won significant awards. These trophies include.... 'Best Newcomer' 'Best Costumes' and 'Best representation of Theme.'
Although we took a break from this project to run other events in 2007, some of our previous year's costumes from carnivals in 2006 - giant football player puppets - are going to be used by children from Bootle in the new Liverpool Echo Arena at an event to be staged later this year.
'Ykids is like I want to do it all the time.'
